What is the significance of your derby name and number? I am a child of the 80s and love the image of street culture meeting urban revolution with one iconic symbol, the boombox. Also, I love big sound and big hits, whether it’s music or with my hips, putting the BOOM in Boombox.

What do you do when you are not skating? I help people buy and sell their homes. I am a real estate agent and I love it! (Want to buy a house?) I’m also a mom to my sassy Li’l Boom, my #1 fan and hanging with Box Fan, my other #1 fan.

What made you decide to join roller derby? I skated a lot growing up, but hadn’t skated much since I was about 14. I learned about the Oaks Park Derby 101 Class and started going every Saturday night with my pal, Va. I initially had no intentions of joining a team, but I ended up falling in love with the sport, joined the Wreckers (recreational league), then progressed from there. I’ve been doing it ever since.

What keeps you motivated to keep skating? I grew up playing team sports and I didn’t realize how much I missed the camaraderie until I started playing derby. I also love the challenge of trying to master new moves, learn a new strategy or go faster. There is always something new to learn. The most motivating thing of all though, is the derby family. It’s a community of strong, funny, athletic women and men and the love of the sport unites us all.

Who is your derby crush/hero? I’d have to say my derby hero is probably VaVaBoom! We’ve been friends forever and we started playing derby at the same time. Over the years, we have supported and encouraged each other and we bring our kids to each other’s bouts. She’s an incredible blocker for RCR’s GnR and the one who has inspired me to keep going the most.

What is the best advice you would give to someone who wants to join derby or what was the best advice given to you? So many people have this on their bucket list and that’s where it remains. Just stop thinking about it and try it!

What is your favorite ’90’s song and why? “No Scrubs,” by TLC. Because it’s the first song that came into my head and I still love it after all these years.

Name three interesting/ random facts about yourself. 1. I was a go-go dancer for a funk band for a couple of years. 2. For six months, I drove across the U.S. with 3 other people in a 36-ft. RV painted by Peter Maxx, the Yellow Submarine artist for my job. 3. I have climbed the highest freestanding mountain in the world, Mt. Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania, Africa.
