Machete Michaud

Age: 24

Hometown: Hillsboro, OR

What is the significance of your derby name?

Machete Michaud – because I love my last name! Michaud means “spontaneously beautiful”. Machete came from me wanted something to go with it that had an M. My derby wife shouted to me from the bedroom, while I was going potty, shouting, “MACHETE MICHAUD!!”

League responsibility:  Training committee, safety committee, mentor, blocker and sometimes back up jammer

What do you do when you’re not skating?

Hanging out with my derby girls! Working as a supportive housing associate, too. I help people with mental illnesses live independently. Spending time with the family, my friends or the ladies. I also enjoy snowboarding and the outdoors.

What made you decide to join roller derby?

My roommate, and derby wife, wanted to join back when we lived in Ashland, OR, together. She did not want to join alone, so I joined with her! Best choice ever!!

What keeps you motivated to keep skating?

I love to skate, I love the team, and I love all the cool work us girls do on and off the track! Skating is my passion and makes me happy. I do what makes me happy

Who is your derby crush/hero?

All the derby crushes! But perhaps Scald Eagle! She jams like a fierce lion and blocks like an elephant!

What is the best advice you would give to someone who wants to join derby or what was the best advice given to you?

Get low! And NEVER GIVE UP! Just keep swimming and you’ll love the end results

Name three interesting / random facts about yourself:

1. I’ve had over 69 stitches, none from derby!
2. (Knock on wood!) I’ve yet to have a roller derby related injury after over three years of skating
3. My derby twin is our coach! I started skating with her with Southern Oregon Roller Girls! I love learning from her and that she is coaching this amazing team!!!
