What is the significance of your derby name and number?
They both come from literature. My name combines my two favorite things: feminist literature and puns. Margaret Atwood is the writer of a host of incredible feminist works, specifically the Handmaid’s Tale. I’m a writer, so not naming myself after a writer seemed wrong. My number is the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything.
What do you do when you are not skating?
Write. Work. Think about skating.
What made you decide to join roller derby?
I’ve always wanted to do it. My grandma was a competitive roller skater in the 1940s and I wanted to carry on that legacy.
What keeps you motivated to keep skating?
My grandma and my teammates.
What is the best advice you would give to someone who wants to join derby or what was the best advice given to you?
You have just as much right to be here as anyone else does. Don’t get in your own way.
If you could be any super hero/villain who would you be and what would be your power?
I’d be Magneto. He had a lot of valid points. Questionable execution, but valid points nonetheless.
If you had six months with no obligations or financial constraints, what would you do with the time?
I’d say something lofty like travel, but I know I’d just end up sleeping.
