What is the significance of your derby name and number? Like sprinkles on a sundae, marrying the love of my life had the added bonus that I took on the awesome last name of Valentine. My derby name refers to the 1929 murder of 7 gangsters in Chicago, an event known as the St. Valentine’s Day massacre between Al Capone and Bugs Moran.

What do you do when you are not skating? I love spending time with my little “circus” (2 young Labradors and 2 cats).

What made you decide to join roller derby? I saw an online ad one morning for the 2012 season opener of the Rose City Rollers and convinced a few friends to go with me that night to the Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum to watch the bouts. I immediately fell in love with the sport and community. The skaters looked so fierce, confident, and badass, like they were having so much fun… I thought to myself, “I have to do this.” I couldn’t roller skate when I first joined derby (yikes!). I grew up playing street hockey on roller blades in the ’90s, but it turns out that rollerskating and rollerblading are different skills. Despite a ton of falls and some pretty ugly bruises, I stuck with it — and I am so grateful that I did! What keeps you motivated to keep skating? Roller derby is not as easy as most skaters make it look. Some days are really difficult! What keeps me coming back for more are those moments of skating where it feels like I’m flying. Everything just goes well, and there’s no way to feel anything but joy. There’s also something really beautiful and inspiring about the community. Who wouldn’t want to surround themselves with confident, smart, passionate people?

What is the best advice you would give to someone who wants to join derby or what was the best advice given to you? To anyone considering joining roller derby, I say take this chance and believe in yourself! Derby will push you physically, mentally, and emotionally — and most likely, you will find a new appreciation and sense of amazement at what you’re able to accomplish. On the hard days, remember that your dedication and perseverance is inspiring someone, somewhere. Don’t let negative self-talk ruin any day. Treat yourself like you’d treat a friend, with compassion and kindness. And remember that you can get through anything for 2 minutes.  <3

What is your favorite ’90’s song and why? This is a tough one. Most of my music library is comprised of 90s tunes! My favorite band has always been the Goo Goo Dolls, and their 1998 album called “Dizzy Up the Girl” was FULL of awesome songs. Have you listened to “Iris” lately? Gorgeous! I have to choose a favorite album instead of song… I just can’t narrow it down to one!

Name three interesting/ random facts about yourself:

1. I participated in competitive swimming for about 5 years and absolutely loved the butterfly stroke.
2. I taught myself how to play guitar in high school and performed an original song at the county fair.
3. My favorite food is waffle fries. Mmmmmm!!
